Saudi Arabia to Host Inaugural Olympic eSports Games in 2025
Gaming has evolved significantly over the years, extending its appeal to a wider audience than ever before. Twenty years ago, eSports might not have been considered a serious contender for such prestigious recognition. However, the landscape of gaming events has transformed, making the concept of Olympic eSports more feasible.
The 2010s saw a massive surge in eSports popularity. As the internet and gaming integrated into mainstream culture, eSports gained legitimacy and recognition. The launch of Twitch in 2011 revolutionized the way companies and advertisers viewed gaming events. What once were niche local competitions have now become global spectacles, with tournaments for games like Fortnite attracting millions of viewers.
The first official Olympic eSports Games will take place in 2025 in Saudi Arabia, following a successful trial Olympic eSports Series in 2023, which notably featured Fortnite. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has carefully deliberated the inclusion of eSports, recognizing the attention and revenue generated by the gaming scene in recent years. Rumors suggest that games such as League of Legends, Street Fighter, and Rocket League may be featured in the competition.
Before the 2023 eSports Series, eSports had already made an appearance in the 2007 Asian Indoor Games. A decade later, during an Olympic Summit, professional eSports was seriously considered. By 2022, the Olympic eSports Series was established, paving the way for the inaugural competition in 2025. The IOC aims to attract younger audiences, which is why the Olympic eSports Games will now be a regular event.
Saudi Arabia boasts over 23 million gamers, providing a substantial local audience for hosting these competitions. On a global scale, the potential reach is immense. The IOC plans to develop a separate financial model for eSports, distinct from the traditional Olympic Games, to address the unique requirements of eSports events. This includes the costs associated with technology, streaming setups, and venues.
While gamers eagerly await the 2025 event, the successful trial runs provide a promising outlook for the future of Olympic eSports.
