Halo Infinite Introduces Third-Person Mode: A Bold New Direction for the Franchise
343 Industries has officially announced the addition of a third-person mode to Halo Infinite, set to launch next month. This new mode is being introduced as a "new way to play," marking a significant shift not only for Halo Infinite but for the entire Halo franchise, which has traditionally been rooted in first-person gameplay.
When Halo Infinite first launched in December 2021, it gained considerable popularity, reaching a peak of over 250,000 players on Steam and consistently ranking among the top Xbox games. By the end of last year, it was revealed that the game had attracted over 30 million unique players. However, despite this initial success, the number of active players significantly declined, largely due to the absence of key features and modes, such as split-screen co-op and Forge. While 343 Industries gradually added these missing elements, they weren’t enough to sustain or reignite player interest on a large scale.
Now, 343 is taking a more bold approach to bring players back to the game. In a recent post on 343’s official Twitter, the studio unveiled a third-person mode for Halo Infinite through a brief gameplay trailer. Previously, third-person gameplay in Halo was only available through mods, so this represents a notable change for a series that has been defined by its first-person mechanics. Outside of a few transitions—such as when players operate turrets or vehicles—Halo has always remained firmly in the first-person genre.
Mixed Reactions: Halo Infinite’s Third-Person Mode Sparks Debate
The community response to the third-person mode has been mixed. Some players are excited about the new feature and plan to return to the game once it's available. On the other hand, some critics argue that the mode gives Halo Infinite a "Fortnite-like" feel, questioning whether this is the best direction for the game. These detractors feel that the third-person view doesn't align with the Halo experience and might be a misallocation of the studio’s resources. Nevertheless, the addition of a third-person mode is welcome news for players who have long requested this perspective.
Although details remain scarce, 343 confirmed via Twitter that the third-person mode will be released in November 2024. Whether or not players agree with the shift, this update demonstrates 343 Industries’ willingness to explore new territory within the Halo franchise.
With another mainline Halo game currently in development, it's unclear if 343 will continue experimenting with features like third-person mode for the single-player campaign or if they'll stick with the series’ hallmark first-person perspective. Either way, it signals an era of innovation and experimentation for the Halo universe.
